The apartment block on Jan Luijkenstraat is a listed building situated next to the famous Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This listed building houses four luxury apartments and a boutique. The entire property is fitted with state-of-the-art luxury systems, such as a home automation system and a heat recovery system, and is fully equipped with underfloor heating.
The semi-detached townhouse was designed in 1898 and occupied by the architect Eduard Cuypers, who also had his office there. It was in this office, situated opposite the Rijksmuseum, that the Amsterdam School originated, a style of Dutch architecture that flourished between 1910 and 1930.
Cuypers employed an eclectic architectural style. He combined elements from various movements, which is clearly evident in this building through features such as asymmetry, floral and foliage reliefs in natural stone, stained glass, bay windows, the turret and dormer windows at different levels.
